Sun Mart in Fergus Falls closing
FERGUS FALLS, Minn.—About 60 employees will be without a job at Sun Mart when the grocery store here closes next month.
Grocery distributor and retailer SpartanNash announced to their Fergus Falls Sun Mart employees on Friday, June 15, that the location would be aiming for a July 14 closure.
Pharmacy scripts are being sold to Walgreens, and the department is shutting down June 19. The Sun Mart Express fuel station does not have a definite closing date.
In a statement, SpartanNash said it's been an "honor and a privilege to serve the community for nearly 20 years." The company is encouraging its 49 store employees and 10 fuel center employees to apply for jobs at their distribution center or their Family Fare stores in Fargo.
Fergus Falls Mayor Ben Schierer says the loss of jobs is a deep concern for him, but he believes the city will be able to absorb those jobs. He said he received several calls from area employers saying they have openings available for Sun Mart employees to step into.
"If people are looking at going from four grocery stores to three as a signal of economic downturn, they're looking at the wrong signs," Schierer said.
