14U soccer state: Worthington remains unbeaten with state victory
SHAKOPEE — Worthington’s 14U soccer team won its first game at the state tournament on Sunday, 4-0 over the Twin Cities’ North Suburban Soccer Association and needs to win twice more to capture the championship.
Worthington faces Owatonna today at 5 p.m. A victory in that matchup would propel Worthington to the championship game Saturday, and a loss would eliminate it from the tournament.
The locals, who are undefeated this summer, scored twice in the first half and twice in the second half to beat North Suburban. Moobay Mowah, Edwin Hernandez, Jon Kingkong and Kevin Gutierrez scored Worthington’s goals.
“Overall, we did pretty good,” said 14U coach Jorge Duron. “We didn’t finish some plays, especially in the first half. The goalkeeper was making some pretty good saves, too.”
Defensively, Worthington was very solid, only allowing “two or three shots” on goal altogether, according to Duron.
