14U soccer: Worthington advances to state title match
SHAKOPEE — Worthington’s 14U boys soccer team defeated Owatonna Tuesday to advance to the state championship match.
The locals, coached by Jorge Duron, shut out Owatonna 4-0 in the semifinals, scoring once in the first half and three more times in the second half to secure a title attempt.
Obang Ojulu scored Worthington’s first goal. Joe Reveles scored the second. Kevin Gutierrez and Edwin Hernandez also put the ball in goal for Worthington.
Sander Diaz was in goal for Worthington.
The 14U squad will play for the state championship at 11 a.m. in Shakopee.
Worthington won its first state tournament match on Sunday with a 4-0 win over the Twin Cities’ North Suburban Soccer Association.
As in the game against North Suburban, Worthington played strong defense against Owatonna. The locals were offsides occasionally in the first half against their rivals’ trapping style of play, but in the second half they found their stride.
Worthington emphasized ball control in the second half. A fast team that communicates well, Duron’s outfit soon adjusted ably to Owatonna’s tactics.
