178 post offices could close in Iowa
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- The Postal Service is considering closing 178 post offices in Iowa as the financially-strapped agency looks for ways to save money.
The Postal Service said Tuesday it is reviewing 3,700 of its 32,000 offices nationwide. Most are in small towns and have low volumes of business.
Over the last four years, the Postal Service has cut its staff by 130,000 and reduced costs by $12 billion in an effort to cope with the loss of first-class mail to the Internet and the drop in advertising mail caused by the recession.
