18U softball: Storm finishes third in Fairmont
FAIRMONT — The Worthington Storm 18U softball team picked up a pair of convincing wins sandwiched around a heartbreaking loss Saturday on their way to a 2-1 weekend and a third-place finish in Fairmont.
The Storm opened the weekend with a 12-0, run-rule win over Duluth. In the tournament semifinals, they did battle with Mankato and held a 2-1 lead going into the bottom of the last inning, only to see their opponents put up two runs and steal the victory. Worthington recovered quickly, however, when it defeated Sleepy Eye 8-2 in the third-place game.
“It was a good tournament,” Storm coach Joe Kinley said. “We played some really good teams. We were short a few girls and we went over there with only 10, but the girls that were there played their hearts out.”Ida Rogers-Ferguson got Worthington off to a big start when she twirled a no-hitter in the Storm’s win over Duluth. Over four innings, she struck out eight.Offensively, Worthington was led by Paige Kinley and Bailey Grussing, both of whom went 3-for-3. Brianna Mullaney added a 2-for-3 showing.The Storm trailed Mankato 1-0 going into the sixth inning of the second game. Bailey Tish led off the top of the inning with a single a Rogers-Ferguson double put runners on second and third with nobody out. Grussing gave her team the lead when she cracked a two-bagger of her own, putting the Storm on top 2-1.Unfortunately for Worthington, it didn’t hold. Mankato was able to plate two in the bottom of the inning for a walk-off win.Rogers-Ferguson took the loss, throwing all six and allowing just five hits while striking out two.“It was a good, clean game between two good teams,” Coach Kinley said.In the final game of the weekend, Becca Linder went 4-for-4 while Rebecca Kazemba allowed only two runs on four hits as the pair led Worthington to a 8-2 win to take third.Kazemba and Brooke Grussing added 2-for-3 games offensively.The Storm completed its three games at the tournament without committing a single error.
