AMATEUR BASEBALL: Barnstormers advance to state semis
VESELI -- The Southwest Barnstormers amateur baseball team advanced to the semifinals of the 35-and-over amateur baseball state tournament thanks to a pair of excellent pitching performances in its opening two games.
Mike Wenninger pitched a one-hitter to give the Barnstormers a 6-0 win against Lonsdale in the opening round on Friday and Rob Petersen followed with a complete-game shutout as the Barnstormers beat Searles 1-0, avenging a loss to Searles in last year's state championship game.
Wenninger had a no-hitter with two outs remaining against Lonsdale, but allowed a seeing-eye single between first and second and had to settle for a one-hitter.
He allowed only one walk, hit three batters and struck out 13. He also helped his own cause by going 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI at the plate.
Kevin Nowotny gave Southwest a 3-0 lead in the first inning by clearing the bases with a bases-loaded double. Petersen had the other big hit in the game with a two-run single in the second inning.
Petersen also contributed with his bat against Searles to back his fine pitching performance, knocking in the game's only run.
Sam Baumgartner (2-for-3) reached base on a single in the third, moved to second on a groundout and then scored on an RBI-single from Petersen.
Chuck Sendelbach (2-for-3, double) accounted for the Barnstormers' other two hits in the game.
Petersen allowed five hits, one walk and struck out three in a complete-game effort.
Last year's victory by Searles against Southwest in the state championship game was also decided by a 1-0 score.
The Barnstormers will face Prior Lake in the semifinals. The game will be played at 8 p.m. in either Jordan or Shakopee.
