Amateur baseball: Cubs defeat Adrian, fall to Foxes

WORTHINGTON — Worthington got a taste of what it will see in the first round of the postseason on Saturday when it faced off with Adrian for the first and only time this weekend.

The Cubs — who open a best-of-3 First Nite and Gopher League playoff series against Adrian at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Worthington — took a 5-2 win over the A’s on Saturday but couldn’t carry that momentum into Sunday’s regular season finale against Martin County. The Foxes beat Worthington by the same score to give them a record of 7-12 to finish the season.

In Saturday’s contest, a pair of two-run innings proved to be the difference. The Cubs scored two in the second and held a 2-0 lead until the fifth. Worthington added one more before Adrian finally got on the board with a two-run sixth, cutting its deficit to 3-2.

Worthington’s bats came through in the clutch as they scored two in the bottom of the sixth to get the distance needed.

Adam Munkel went all seven in the win for the Cubs. He allowed two earned runs on seven hits and struck out four. Cody Kontz was the losing pitcher for the A’s when he allowed three earned on 10 hits and fanned four.

Josh Wasmund continued to show power at the plate, bashing a home run during a 2-for-4 performance. Tristan Sorenson was 2-for-3 with a run scored while Eric Koob, Munkel and Ryan Swanson boasted an RBI each.

Kontz helped himself by going 2-for-4 with a double and a run. Glen Kruger was 2-for-4 with a run and Matt Gades went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Sunday, the Cubs took a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first but a three-run third swung the momentum in Martin County’s direction.

Worthington finished the game with 11 hits — all singles — but struggled to turn those into runs. A single tally in the fourth was its last of the day.

Swanson took the loss for the Cubs, allowing two earned runs on seven hits and striking out two over six innings. Sorenson gave up just one hit and struck out five during his three innings of relief work. Steve Zehms went the distance and struck out nine for the Foxes.

Cody Melendrez was 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Cubs with Koob going 2-for-5 with a run scored. Munkel, Justin Jass and Gabe VanderVeen added two hits each.

Worthington and Adrian will open their playoff series at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Worthington. Game 2 is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday in Adrian with a potential Game 3 scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday in Worthington.
