Amateur baseball: Cubs drop opener at Jackson
JACKSON — The Worthington Cubs spotted Jackson a 7-0 lead before their bats finally woke up in their Gopher League season opener Sunday.
By then, the damage had been done. The Bulls finished the game early with a pair of runs in the seventh to take an 11-1 win.
A five-run third gave Jackson all the leverage it really needed. The Cubs scored a run in the fifth, but it wasn’t enough.
Ryan Rasche got the win in relief for the Bulls. He allowed one earned run and struck out three over three innings of work. Andy Wolf was 4-for-5 with two doubles to lead them at the plate.
Adam Munkel went six innings and allowed four earned runs for the Cubs in taking the loss. He struck out two in the effort. He was also 2-for-4 at the plate. Ryan Swanson went 1-for-4 with a double.
The Cubs will host Fairmont at 5 p.m. Sunday in their home opener.

Heron Lake 4, Lakefield 1
HERON LAKE — A three-run fourth proved to be the difference for Heron Lake Sunday as it took a 4-1 First Nite League win over Lakefield.
The Lakers got their first win in three tries this season in a tight battle. Matt Franks went five innings and struck out five on his way to getting the win. Alex Meyer recorded the save.
Ike Rogers was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Meyer went 1-for-2 with two runs and an RBI.
Thomas Albrecht took the loss for the Horned Frogs. Trevon Bargfrede was 2-for-4 at the plate with one driven in.

Hadley 9, Tracy 1
HADLEY — Sam Erickson had a strong showing on the mound and the Buttermakers put up four runs in the third on their way to a 9-1 First Nite League win over Tracy Sunday.
Erickson struck out eight and allowed just three hits in seven innings for the win. Anthony Rohlik took the loss for the Express.
Max Zwart was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Nick Brunning was 3-for-4 with two doubles for Hadley.
