Amateur baseball: Luverne, Hadley, Wilmont win
LUVERNE — The host Luverne Redbirds staked themselves out to a 6-0 lead and held on to defeat Heron Lake 7-5 Wednesday in the first game of their best-of-three Region 13C amateur baseball playoff series.
In an offensive-minded affair, Luverne collected 14 hits and the Lakers had 13 of their own. Neither team committed an error.
Jared Pick went 2-for-5 at the plate for Luverne and drove in four runs. Teammate Phil Paquette went 3-for-4 and drove in another run. Brian Beuning, Skylar Wenninger and Codie Zeutenhorst both added two hits of their own. Both of Zeutenhorst’s hits were doubles.
For Heron Lake, Ben Scheevel went 3-for-5 with an RBI and Alex Meyer was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Eric Milbrath and Lon Eichenberger both added two more hits.Paquette was the winning pitcher, going seven innings and allowing two earned runs while striking out seven. Chris Halbur was 3-for-4 with a triple. Nick Bruning was 2-for-4 with a double, triple and three RBI. Eric Wieneke was 2-for-5 with a double, triple and three RBI. And Joe Larson was 2-for-4 with two RBI.Zach Bruns started on the mound for Hadley and pitched seven innings for the victory. He allowed four earned runs.Isaac Dolan pitched the first six innings for Milroy and took the loss.Derek Riley and Cody Mather both went 3-for-5 for Milroy. The Cubs maintained that 1-0 lead until the bottom of the fifth inning when Wilmont scored on an unearned run. Then the Cardinals took the lead to stay with two runs in the seventh.Justin Saufley pitched a gem of a game for the Cardinals, going the distance on a six-hitter.
