Amateur baseball: Luverne walks off for state tourney win

JORDAN — Delano was one out away from forcing extra innings with Luverne when the two teams met in the opening round of the Minnesota Baseball Association Class C State Tournament Sunday.

Luckily for the Redbirds, Skyler Wenninger had other thoughts on the matter.

Luvere’s swift-hitting leadoff man ripped a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth to score Joey Slieter and break a 2-2 tie. The dramatic run gave the Redbirds a 3-2 victory and propelled them into the second round of the state tournament.

There, they’ll face off with Region 3 champion Faribault at 7:30 p.m. Sunday in Belle Plaine.

Luverne led most of the contest after putting two runs on the board in the bottom of the third to go up 2-0. The score remained that way until the Athletics finally broke through on Redbirds’ starting pitcher Nate Harberts.

Delano got two of its own to tie the game, but Brian Beuning came on in relief to prevent further damage. He pitched a scoreless ninth to set up the thrilling finish.

Beuning got the win in relief, firing one and two-thirds innings and allowing no runs on two hits while striking out three. Harberts took a no-decision after seven and one-third during which he surrendered two runs on four hits and fanned three.

Wenninger led the way at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI. Slieter went 2-for-3 with a run scored. James Fisher and Jared Pick both went 2-for-4 with Pick adding an RBI.

Hutchinson draftee Kyle Messner got the loss in relief for Delano. Kevin Jaunich was 1-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs.
