AMATEUR BASEBALL ROUNDUP: Wilmont downs Heron Lake 3-1

HERON LAKE -- Justin Saufley pitched six sharp innings Sunday afternoon, and the Wilmont Cardinals scored a single run in three separate innings to claim a 3-1 victory over the Heron Lake Lakers in a First Nite/Gopher League amateur baseball game at Laker Field.

Saufley struck out six batters over six innings to pick up the win, allowing only four hits, an unearned run and no walks for the Cardinals.

Nate Harberts (one inning, one strikeout) and Adam Diekmann (two innings, four strikeouts) pitched out of the bullpen for Wilmont, with Diekmann earning the save in a two-run Cardinals' win.

Ben Scheevel pitched equally well for Heron Lake, twirling all nine innings and striking out four batters. Scheevel scattered seven hits and allowed just three runs (one earned) and two walks in a strong complete-game effort for the Lakers.

Steven Kremer led Wilmont with a pair of hits, including a double. Saufley, Harberts, Diekmann, Josh Wasmund and Ryan Swanson each added a base hit, while Joe Ahrens drove in a run on a fielder's choice groundout.

Lucas Knutson singled and scored Heron Lake's only run in the third inning. Scheevel, Eric Milbrath, Kirk McBreen (double) and Matt Franks also had a hit apiece for the Lakers.

Wilmont (2-0) plays at Luverne Wednesday, while Heron Lake (0-3, 0-2) travels to Springfield Tuesday and Fairmont Wednesday.

Windom 13, ML 4

WINDOM -- Kody Johnson's 5-for-5 display at the plate highlighted a 17-hit offensive attack Sunday night, as the Windom Pirates opened their season with a First Nite League victory over the Mountain Lake Lakers at Island Park.

Johnson smashed three doubles, a triple and a single for the Pirates, driving in a pair of runs. Darin Tietz and Tyler Knutson (two RBIs) were both 3-for-5 for Windom.

Dane Nielsen (double, RBI) and Matt Anderson (two RBIs) both cracked a pair of hits to round out Windom's multi-hit performances, as the Pirates scored three or more runs in three separate innings.

Omengkar Tadau earned the win on the mound, striking out six batters in 5 1/3 innings for the Pirates. He allowed a run on four hits and three walks before Knutson (two strikeouts, one walk) pitched the rest of the way for Windom.

Dusty Pfeiffer pitched five innings and was tagged with the loss for Mountain Lake, while Kyle Schroeder was 2-for-3 to lead the Lakers offensively.

Windom (1-0) hosts Fox Lake Wednesday night.

Marshall 5, Hadley 1

HADLEY -- Derek Rignell, Trevor Anderson and Tyler Flattum each had two hits Sunday, as the Marshall A's claimed a season-opening victory over the Hadley Buttermakers in a seven-inning game.

Jared Pick earned the win on the mound for Marshall (1-0).

Pat O'Brien pitched for Hadley and took the loss. He also had a hit and an RBI sacrifice fly, while Wade Rignell had the Buttermakers' only other hit.

Hadley 9, Tracy 5

HADLEY -- The Buttermakers hosted the Tracy Express in the nightcap of a season-opening doubleheader Sunday afternoon and scored three runs in each of the first three innings to claim a Gopher League victory.

Matt Ackerman went 3-for-3 with four RBIs to pace Hadley at the plate, while Luke Schneider was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. T.J. Schmidt added a double, an RBI and three runs scored for the Buttermakers (1-1, 1-0).

Zach Bruns earned the win on the mound, striking out four batters in four innings for Hadley. Schneider and Justin Reinsma pitched in relief for the Buttermakers, who host Sacred Heart Saturday at 2 p.m.

Eric Hendrickx took the loss for Tracy, while Robbie Slinkman cracked a double.
