AMATEUR BASEBALL: Winsted defeats Lamberton
GAYLORD -- Winsted lead-off batter Tony Kley was 4-for-6 Sunday and was one of five Wildcats that crossed the plate twice, as the Region 7 champions defeated Lamberton, 14-1, Sunday in a third round game of the Class C State Amateur Baseball Tournament at Walsh Field.
Winsted (23-11) stretched a 2-0 lead into a 10-1 advantage by scoring eight runs in the top of the eighth inning and then crossed the plate four more times in the top of the ninth.
Lamberton (27-10) suffered its first loss of the tournament after posting victories over Sacred Heart (2-0) and Windom (3-1) in the first two rounds.
Having advanced to the final eight of the 32-team tournament, the Region 2 champion Long Sox are still alive in the double elimination format and will play St. Martin at Gaylord Friday at 6 p.m.
St. Martin lost a 10-5 decision to St. Cloud Orthopedic Sunday.
Second baseman Isaac Jenniges and catcher Andy Cook were both 2-for-3 Sunday for the Long Sox, while center fielder Don Strand and first baseman Landon Erickson each were 1-for-4.
Lamberton scored its run in the bottom of the eighth inning, getting a lead-off walk from shortstop Mike Samyn, followed by a single from Jenniges.
Long Sox third baseman Colby Pack reached on an error, which allowed Samyn to score.
After another Wildcat error, Winsted pitcher Mike Mueller (eight innings, seven strikeouts, three walks, five hits) worked out of the jam by getting a groundout.
Kley then pitched the ninth and struck out the side after giving up a lead-off double to Cook.
Matt Johnson (seven innings, three strikeouts, two walks, seven hits, two earned runs) took the loss for the Long Sox, who also pitched Tyler Reiner, Michael Anderson, Jacob Wahl and Johnny Pistulka in the final two innings.
