WORTHINGTON -- A change in venue to the parking lot of W-2's Quality Meats will help keep Worthington's Saturday morning Farmers Market fresh this summer.

"It's more visible, and ... it's a paved parking lot," said Renee Peters of Rushmore, organizer of the weekly event.

So far, about 25 vendors have signed up for the Saturday sales.

The Saturday Farmers Market rules have also changed slightly, in that this year, no early sales will be permitted. Instead, sales will begin at 6:30 a.m. on the dot every Saturday. Vendors will also be required to clean up after themselves.

The downtown Farmers Market will continue from 4 to 7 p.m. each Tuesday at the corner of 10th Street and Second Avenue.

At this point in the season, growers, bakers and canners are bringing a wide variety of produce to the market, including lettuce, beans, cucumbers, broccoli, radishes, cilantro, onions, pea pods, raspberries, carrots, rhubarb, beets, breads and cookies, jams, pickled beets, salsas, pickles and pickled jalapenos.

"Broccoli doesn't even taste the same. It's got a whole different flavor when it's fresh from the garden," Peters said, adding people should visit the Farmers Market "to get fresh stuff that tastes much better than the store stuff."

Anyone interested in becoming a vendor at the Saturday Farmers Market in Worthington should contact Peters at 478-4330 or 370-1468.
