Bernard Vander Veen

Bernard Vander Veen, 81, of Worthington, MN went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, August 20, 2013. He was surrounded by his family at the Sanford Worthington Medical Center. He was born on April 2, 1932, in Osceola County, IA, to Ralph and Florence Vander Veen.

He graduated from Ocheyedan High School in 1950. He joined the Army in January 1953, where he was trained as an Intermediate Speed Radio Operator. After serving two years in the First Armored Division, Fort Hood, TX, he remained with the reserves until 1961.

Bernie spent most of his occupational years as a self-employed carpenter. After retirement, he devoted himself full time to the loving care of his first wife, Katherine. He was an active member of the Christian Reformed Church of Worthington for 47 years.

Bernie’s favorite thing to do was spending time with his family and friends, but he also enjoyed wood working, camping, gardening, and music.

Bernie married Katherine Wolterstorff on June 8, 1956, and they were married for 49 years. To this union were born four children: Ken (Lauri) Vander Veen, Worthington, MN; Dennis (Shari) Vander Veen, Worthington, MN; Kristine (Keith) Carpenter, Seattle WA; and Connie (Randy) Buntjer, Ellsworth, MN. He also cherished 16 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

On January 21, 2006, Bernie married Lorraine Slagter. They enjoyed 7 years together. This union added five step children: Randy (Carla) Slagter, Prinsburg, MN; Corwin (Pam) Slagter, Sibley, IA; Arlyn (Cindy) Slagter, Sioux Falls, SD; Judy (Jeff) Frikke, Prinsburg, MN; and Lori (Craig) Van Peursem, Sioux Falls, SD. He cherished another 16 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by three sisters: Hilda Oltman, Parkersburg IA, Betty (Art) Zevenburgen, Little Rock, IA, and Rosella (Harold) Sankey, Sioux Falls, SD and two sisters-in-law: Helen (Fred) Vander Veen, Sibley, IA, and Margaret (Klaas) Vander Veen, Sibley, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Fred and Klaas, one sister, Winnie, and wife, Katherine.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2013, at 11:00 a.m., at the Worthington Christian Reformed Church in Worthington, MN. Committal services will be held prior to the service at 9:30 a.m., at the Ocheyedan Township Cemetery near Ocheyedan, IA.

Visitation will be held on Friday, August 23, 2013, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington, MN.
