Boondocks to host grand opening Friday

WORTHINGTON -- With a flare toward Redneck and Hillbilly décor, items like a Chevrolet grill hanging on the wall and a Ford truck end gate repurposed as a bar table fit right in at the new Boondocks bar, formerly A&T Tap in downtown Worthington.

Under new ownership for little more than a week, the place has taken on a new appearance, from the lime green paint on the building's exterior to the freshly painted walls and newly installed floors inside.

"It's very comforting. It's a whole new atmosphere," said Sumer Anderson, Boondocks owner.

Everything is being cleaned and spruced up for the bar's grand opening and farewell party for A&T Tap owner Craig Sailor, she said. The event is this Friday night, with a live band, Third Shift, to perform at 9 p.m. In addition, two free kegs will be opened at 9.

Anderson, who has lived in Worthington for the past seven years, approached Sailor about the business and learned he was interested in selling. She worked with him for a couple of weeks before taking over.

The Oklahoma native has been a stay-at-home mom for the past four years, but has more than 20 years' experience in waitressing for some of the "best steakhouses in Oklahoma," Anderson said.

She has changed the menu a bit from the Tap's array of food items, renaming some items and adding others. Among the new additions are deep-fried pickles (Pickle-O's) and fried okra to country-fried steak strips and Hillbilly nachos. Chislic will remain on the menu, as well as selections of sandwiches, salads and baskets. Dinner items include ribeye, walleye and chicken.

"We have our own barbecue sauce," Anderson said. "Our pulled pork sandwich will always be on the menu."

Dakoda Kunerth Monier has been hired as the cook, and Anderson has amassed a staff of six at Boondocks.

New signs out front declare the place as Boondocks: PG13, which Anderson uses to alert clientele.

"We have some things you may not want your kids to see in here," she said.

Pool tables and dart boards will remain at Boondocks for leisure and league play, and Anderson plans to reopen the volleyball court as well. By Friday, she's also hoping to have an outdoor patio ready for guests to enjoy.

"We're going to try to have theme nights twice a month," she added. "At Halloween, this will be the haunted house."

Boondocks is open from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Monday through Saturday. Kitchen hours are until 10 p.m., although fryers will remain open until midnight.
