Boys basketball: Ellsworth shakes skid, grabs a ‘W’ over Trojans
ELLSWORTH — In an exciting matchup of two boys basketball squads hailing from Nobles County, Class A’s 10th-rated Ellsworth Panthers edged Worthington Monday night, 69-62, on their home floor at Ellsworth High School.
The Panthers led Worthington by just nine points at halftime and held similar margins throughout the second half. They were able to finish the game off, snapping a two-game skid from losses to Mountain Lake Area and Southwest Christian, both of which are top 10 teams and are leaders in the Red Rock Conference.
Worthington senior Marcus Potter led all scorers for the night with 23 points. Will Mulder chipped in 11 and Spencer Grafing 10. Ellsworth had senior Mitch Leuthold heading the show, scoring 19 points for his club paired with 18 from Drew Cheskie and 13 from John Kramer.
Potter dished out three assists and senior Will Dudley collected two steals for the night. Mulder led the team on the boards, collecting eight caroms. Grafing had six.
Ellsworth was the first ranked opponent the Trojans have faced in awhile. Despite the loss, Trojans coach Jared Keaveny was pleased with how is kids battled at times Monday.
“We played very hard at times tonight but had a bad stretch in the first half and didn’t respond,” he said.
The loss dropped Worthington to 5-10 on the year in anticipation for a trip to Pipestone Area (8-7, 4-3 in Southwest Conference) on Friday night.
Last time the Trojans faced Pipestone Area, it was an 81-76 triumph for the Arrows at WHS.
