REDWOOD FALLS — In their previous game on Tuesday against Jackson County Central, the Worthington Trojans boys basketball team erupted to a 9-0 lead en route to a convincing victory. On Friday in Redwood Falls, the opposite occurred. Redwood Valley led 4-0 and 16-7 early and drubbed the Trojans 82-57.

The victory moved the Cardinals to 8-3 overall and 4-1 in the Southwest Conference. The Trojans, still plagued with inconsistency so far in the 2013-14 campaign, are 4-6 overall and 3-3 in conference play.

The Cardinals, expertly cutting off Worthington offensive maneuvers and forcing turnovers, essentially put the game away before halftime. With 11:54 remaining in the first half, Redwood had moved out to a 24-7 lead.

A Carter Lindner three-point play brought Worthington a little bit closer at 26-12 but with a little more than eight minutes to go it was 33-17. Six more unanswered points made it 39-17. It was 42-24 at halftime.

Sophomore guard Cade Johnson came off the bench to hit three three-point shots in the first half and had 14 points at the break. Worthington was saddled with 13 first half turnovers compared to Redwood Valley’s four.

Redwood Valley allowed no serious second half comeback, leading by more than 30 points before settling for a 25-point margin of victory.

Johnson finished with 16 points. Senior forward Taquez Perkins led all scorers with 24 points and nine rebounds. Thane Widmer added 14 and Joe Smith 12 for the Cards. Mitchell Fischer had four assists.

For Worthington, Will Dudley and Marcus Potter each had 10 points. Lindner and Will Mulder scored nine apiece.

Potter was credited with five assists and four rebounds. Jake Weg had four rebounds.

In the B squad game, Redwood Valley bested Worthington 62-58 in overtime.
