PIPESTONE — Revenge is a powerful potion, and maybe it played a part Friday night in the Worthington Trojans’ 79-62 boys basketball rout of host Pipestone Area.

On Dec. 19, the Arrows beat the Trojans 81-76 on the Trojans’ home floor as junior center Collin Moeller scored 44 points. In the rematch, Moeller finished with just one point and the Trojans dominated.

“The kids have been talking all week about being ready for this one,” said WHS head coach Jared Keaveny, whose team improved to 6-10 on the season and to 5-4 in the Southwest Conference. The Trojans, he said, played “with their heads in the game.”

And with the basketball in the net. Worthington hit 17 of 30 field goals in the first half, including five three-pointers, en route to a 46-20 halftime lead.

The Trojans’ focus was obvious early on as they moved out to an 8-2 lead, which became 20-4 under the 11-minute mark. Sturdy, aggressive defense paved the way. Worthington allowed only two scores to Pipestone Area on consecutive possessions before intermission.

Senior guard Spencer Grafing led Worthington with 21 points while Marcus Potter — who had 13 points in the first half — finished with 15. Will Mulder had 12 points and Carter Lindner 10 to round out the Trojans in double figures. Grafing and Mulder finished with five rebounds apiece. Grafing and Potter both had four assists. And Jake Weg led the team in rebounds with six.

Unofficially, Worthington committed only 11 turnovers in the game.

Pipestone Area (9-9 overall, 5-5 in the conference) made a spirited run to begin the second half, outscoring Worthington 14-4 to pull to within 50-34. But the comeback stalled.

Dominic Freese scored 12 points to pace the Arrows while teammates Justin Rops and Boyer Bouman added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
