Boys basketball: Ver Steeg’s 1,000th point boosts G-LR; SWU bests Edgerton
SIBLEY, Iowa — Tanner Ver Steeg, a talented all-around three-year starter for George-Little Rock’s boys basketball team, enjoyed a big night for the Mustangs Monday.
Ver Steeg, a 6-0 senior guard, scored a school record 43 points — on 16-of-29 field goals (all two pointers) and an 11-of-13 performance at the free throw line — to lead his team to a 76-62 Siouxland Conference victory over Sibley-Ocheyedan.
Ver Steeg, who also claimed eight rebounds for the Mustangs, was 32 points shy of 1,000 for his varsity career at the game’s beginning. Scoring in a variety of ways, he reached the magical milestone late in the third quarter and now has 1,011 varsity career points.
Jesse Koerselman scored 13 points for G-LR, which led all the way and improved to 8-12 overall and became 6-11 in the Siouxland. The Mustangs host Boyden-Hull tonight in their last conference game of the season.
S-O (2-18, 0-17) received 21 points from Ty Hanna, 15 by Grant Juber and 11 from Carson Marco.
The Generals host the Okoboji Pioneers in their conference-finale tonight.

EDGERTON — In a Red Rock Conference game which was tied 29-29 at halftime, Southwestern United utilized the double-figure scoring of Brandon Thurk (19), Aaron Fest (14) and Trey Cranston (12), along with a dozen rebounds from Zach Schumacher to pull away from Edgerton after intermission.
Thurk and Fest each claimed nine rebounds for the Wildcats (10-8, 8-4) who remain tied for third-place — with four losses in the conference — with Ellsworth.
Wyatt Butson and Jake Post each netted 10 points to lead the Flying Dutchmen (1-17, 1-13), while Tyus Janssen snagged a team-leading eight rebounds.

Luverne 76, Adrian 63
ADRIAN — Utilizing an effective full-court press, Luverne soared to a huge 21-point halftime lead on Adrian and snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 13-point win over the Dragons.
Josh Slieter had another big scoring game for the Cardinals, netting 26 points while also claiming 10 rebounds.
Nolan Sawtelle (19) and Nicholas Overgaard (11) also reached double figures for Luverne. Overgaard (three assists) drilled a trio of three-pointers, while Sawtelle connected twice from behind the arc and was five-of-seven at the free throw line.
Blake Ziegler (nine points, three steals) dished off eight assists for the Cardinals (4-18) and Zane Hiller contributed eight rebounds.
Nick Reyne scored 26 points and had five assists for the Dragons (6-15), while Taylor Recker netted 20 points and claimed a game-high 15 rebounds.
Adrian hosts Ellsworth tonight. Luverne hosts Redwood Valley.
