Boys hockey: Luverne boys rout on Senior Night, Windom Area falls
LUVERNE — The Luverne Cardinals posted six goals to their tally in the second frame and ousted Brekenridge/Wahpeton, 8-0, Saturday evening on Senior Night in a boys hockey game at Blue Mound Arena.
The win pushed Luverne to 23-0-1 on the year. All 12 of the team’s seniors dressed for the occasion.
Gunnar Olson and Connor Hoffman each scored a couple of goals for Luverne while Toby Sengvongxay had a pure hat trick, netting three goals in a row over an eight-minute span in the second period. At 13:32 of the second period, Jackson Frankenhoff capped his team’s scoring.
In net for Luverne, Kendal Meyer had six saves on six shots faced. The Cardinals’ offense pieced together 52 shots on goal through the game.
“It was Senior Night, so it was good to send those guys out on a good note,” Luverne head coach Derrick Brown said. “In the second period, we moved the puck well, had a good team effort and got a lot of guys in.”

Willmar 7, Windom Area 2
WINDOM — Windom Area couldn’t climb out of a 4-1 start by Willmar to fall at home. They are now 8-14 on the season and 5-5 in the Southwest Conference.
The Eagles scored the game’s opening goal 1:02 into the game when Zach Bartosh and Dylan Pigman found Alex Leopold for a goal. Willmar then came together for four straight goals before Windom Area’s Devin Nielsen scored — 58 seconds into the third period — on assists from Bartosh and Mitchell Macek.
Windom Area goaltender Garrett Schumacher faced 30 shots and saved seven of them. Windom had 24 shots on goal of their own.
