Boys tennis: Luverne reveals its depth in Section 3A
REDWOOD FALLS -- The Luverne Cardinals boys tennis team was undefeated during the regular season. On Thursday, their players revealed all of their strength in the individual portion of the Section 3A tournament.
Top-seeded doubles players Joey and Jonny Vajgrt didn't lose a single set en route to a pair of victories which put them in prime position to qualify for state when action resumes Tuesday (beginning at noon) in Redwood Falls.
The Vajgrts started Thursday with a 6-0, 6-0 whitewash of 16h-seeded Grant Elliot and Shane Nokelby of Yellow Medicine East. They then followed with a 6-0, 6-0 decision over eighth-seeded David Nowacki and Brandon Repsher, also of Yellow Medicine East.
A second doubles team from Luverne, second-seeded Scott Nelson and Blake Ziegler, opened with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over 15h-seeded Bill Smith and Chandler Haag of Pipestone Area. In the next round they rolled by Pipestone Area's seventh-seeded Nathan Baatz and Jared Schiebout 6-4, 6-1.
The Cardinals' Dustin Deutsch won twice in singles. Deutsch, third-seeded, beat No. 14 Kyle Ruppert of Benson 6-0, 6-0, before beating No. 6 Levi Carstensen of Pipestone Area 6-0, 6-0.
Andrew Jelken, fourth seeded the LHS in singles, opened with a 6-0, 6-0 win over No. 13 Eli Weber of Lac qui Parle Valley. He then defeated No. 5 Ben Doeden of Worthington, 6-1, 6-2.
On Tuesday, the Vajgrts will play Worthington's fifth-seeded Dillon Pederson and A.J. Hayenga. Nelson and Ziegler will go against Worthington's Carter Lindner and Andrew Johnson, seeded third.
