Chargers knock off Wildcats, Flying Dutchmen defeat Cougars

WESTBROOK -- Limiting Southwestern United to 105 total yards of offense and taking advantage of four Wildcat turnovers Friday night, the Westbrook-Walnut Grove Chargers remained undefeated with a 30-8 victory in a key Southwest Ridge Conference football game.

W-WG (5-0) scored the first 30 points of the contest, as the Chargers were sharp in all phases of the game.

Derek Eichner (six carries for 40 yards, 7-of-12 passing for 75 yards) scored the game's first touchdown on a 49-yard run in the first quarter to put the Chargers up 6-0.

Josh Merrick (11 rushes for 51 yards, two receptions for 11 yards) scored next from 17 yards out before Jace Jarmer hauled in a five-yard touchdown pass from Eichner to increase W-WG's lead to 18-0 at halftime.

The Chargers, who were 0-for-5 on two-point conversion attempts, scored two more touchdown in the third quarter, as Merrick dashed in for a five-yard score, and Eichner hit Joe Doubler with a 30-yard scoring strike to make it 30-0.

SWU, which had 104 rushing yards and just one passing yard, scored late in the fourth quarter, as Tyler Obermoller broke free for a 35-yard touchdown run. Tyler Timko found Ben Scheevel for the two-point conversion to make it 30-8.

Doubler (two catches for 43 yards) led W-WG's defense with 11 tackles, a fumble recovery, a blocked punt and four sacks, giving him 15 sacks for the season. Weston Dibble also had 11 tackles.

Austin Quade caught two passes for 18 yards, and Eichner charted 10 tackles to go with a sack and a fumble recovery for the Chargers, who visit Lakeview Friday.

SWU (3-2) hosts Edgerton Friday.

EDGERTON -- Beginning with Marty Van Peursem's four-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, the Edgerton Flying Dutchmen scored 24 straight points to defeat the Cedar Mountain/Comfrey Cougars.

CM/C took an early lead on a 95-yard touchdown catch-and-run by Alex Madsen (four catches for 123 yards) from Nick Johns in the second quarter. Van Peursem's score tied the game at 6-apiece at halftime.

Pat Kleinjan (19 carries for 110 yards) scored twice in the second half, as he rushed for an eight-yard touchdown and hauled in a 29-yard aerial from Alex Heard for a score.

Heard (4-for10 passing, 81 yards) also threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Chace Hulstein (31 carries for 116 yards) in the second half.

The Cougars (2-3) scored late in the fourth quarter when Tyler Pendleton caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Johns, who completed 17-of-31 passes for 245 yards.

CM/C had 72 rushing yards, with Tony Schumacher (eight rushes for 37 yards) leading the way.

Van Peursem ran six times for 59 yards, as the Flying Dutchmen -- who punted the ball just once on the night -- racked up 291 yards on the ground.

Brandon Gunnink and Van Peursem led Edgerton with 17 and 14 tackles, respectively, while Jordan Bouw had a pair of sacks.

Edgerton (4-1) visits Southwestern United Friday.
