College wrestling: Goodwin ousted in national tournament

DAILY GLOBE

SPOKANE, Wash. — Minnesota West’s Ben Goodwin lost two matches Friday at the NJCAA national wrestling tournament and is eliminated from further competition.

Goodwin, competing at 174 pounds, lost his first match by fall in 45 seconds to Jarred Johnson of Colby, Kan., when he got trapped in a headlock and was unable to escape.

He lost his second match 6-3 to Mikey Ayala of Southwest Oregon after leading 3-1 with 20 seconds remaining. Ayala was able to turn his fortunes around by dropping Goodwin with a five-point move.

Minnesota West wrestling coach Bob Purcell said Goodwin was understandably disappointed at Friday’s outcome, but he provided “two great years of leadership” for the Bluejays wrestling program.

On Thursday night, it was announced that Purcell, who serves as the chairperson for the NJCAA Wrestling Hall of Fame, was voted the recipient of this year’s NJCAA Wrestling Man of the Year Award.
