WORTHINGTON -- Worthington District 518 Schools plans on honoring our veterans in a number of ways. In past years, ISD schools have put together a very full and active schedule for those who have served this great country. We would like to continue to do so, but in a little different format.

Since Veterans Day falls on Sunday, this year Worthington Middle School and Prairie Elementary would like to offer pre-veterans day programs. The high school plans on offering its program on Monday, Nov. 12. The reason for having these programs a day or two early or late is to spread out the activities so those who have served our country can attend all the planned events without conflicts.

All school-related Veterans Day programs are described below, and are open to the public and welcome anyone who would like to attend. All Americans, regardless of political persuasion or attitude toward ongoing wars, want to express appreciation to our veterans, whether they're from World War I or II or freshly back from Iraq or Afghanistan.

As Americans, we have set aside Nov. 11, Veterans Day, to reflect, remember and honor those who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Today, there are nearly 25 million military veterans living among us. We honor them by teaching younger generations about their sacrifices on our behalf. We need to continue to celebrate America's veterans for keeping this Nation "the land of the free and the home of the brave."

The Worthington Middle School will hold its Veterans Day program on Thursday, Nov. 8 at 9 a.m. in the main gymnasium. Students across all grade levels have participated in our program again this year. We will have essay readers, a short movie clip and the Festival Singers will be performing. We welcome the public to attend.

The Worthington Prairie Elementary Veterans Day program will be on Friday, Nov. 9, opening with breakfast at 7:30 in the gymnasium. There will be a presentation of the colors by American Legion Post 5 and VFW, as well as the Pledge of Allegiance. Fourth-grade student singers will perform and share their student essays, "Dear Veteran".

The Worthington High School Veterans Day program will be on Monday, Nov. 12 starting at 9:30-10:30 a.m. in the Main Gymnasium. It will include musical selections from the WHS choir, band and orchestra along with selected readings explaining the history of the "Who is a Veteran" and "The Origin of the VA Motto." Students will present letters from the Civil War, World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Persian Gulf, Iraq and our recent conflict in Afghanistan. To complete the program, Cindy and Duane Anderson will present a vocal selection, "Letters from War."

Thank you so much for joining us to celebrate Veteran's Day.

Paul Karelis is the principal at Worthington High School.
