Column: Spring on the horizon in District 518
WORTHINGTON -- It's a transitional time of the year, both in terms of weather and high school activities. Most of the springs sports practices are under way, and the fine arts activities are winding down. Before diving into the spring schedule, let's take a look at some of the highlights from winter activities at Worthington High School.
Sophomore Tara Svalland qualified for the state gymnastics meet for the second consecutive year and earned a sixth-place medal in the vault competition. The Trojan wrestlers had three athletes qualify for the state wrestling tournament. Senior Joey Kinley and junior Jared Kinley both made state for the second consecutive year, and freshman Anthony Luft capped an excellent season by earning a sixth-place medal in his first trip to state. The Trojan girls' hockey team won its first game in nearly four years when it defeated Windom, 3-1, in an exciting contest on Dec. 9, 2010. The boys' basketball team reeled off a ten-game winning streak during the season and continued its fine play all the way to the Section 2AAA championship game. The Trojans were edged by Marshall, 73-69, for a berth in the state basketball tournament.
All spring sports with the exception of boys' tennis have started practices in preparation for their first contests on the following dates: Softball, 5 p.m. March 29 at Fairmont; Baseball, 5 p.m. April 5 at Southwestern United (Heron Lake); Track, 6 p.m. April 5 at MSU-Mankato indoor; Golf, 4 p.m. April 7 at Hull Western Christian; and Tennis, 4:15 p.m. April 12 at Pipestone.
Home contests are played at a variety of sites. Golf meets are played at both the Worthington Country Club and Prairie View Golf Links, with the first home meet set for 4:30 p.m. April 12 at WCC against Southwestern United. The softball home opener is 4:30 p.m. April 15 vs. Southwestern United at Centennial fields. The Trojan baseball games are played at the Middle School field, with the home opener at 4 p.m. April 15 against Windom. The track team will host four meets at Trojan Field this spring, with the first meet starting at 4 p.m. April 28. Minnesota West is the site of the home tennis meets, with the Trojans hosting MACCRAY at 4:15 p.m. April 15 in their home opener.
Fine arts activities scheduled for this spring include Sub-Section Speech at Fulda on Monday, March 28, and Section Speech at Southwest Minnesota State University on April 9. Sub-Section Solo-Ensemble competition is April 4 at Fulda. The WHS Choirs spring concert will be at 7:30 p.m. May 2 at the high school gym. The All-School Orchestra concert is scheduled for 7 p.m. May 16 in the high school gym. The WHS Music Department schedule concludes May 17 with the 7 p.m. "Band Bash" in the high school gym.
