Career Development Events (CDE) are contests where members demonstrate their knowledge and abilities in a particular agricultural or leadership contest area. There are two categories of CDEs -- team and leadership. A member may compete on only one team but in both areas. For example, a student may be on the Forestry team and compete in the public speaking contest, too.

To win a trip to the state competition, FFA members must compete for a spot on the local team (five is the maximum). From here, teams advance to regional competition. Region Six encompasses the area from Sherburn to South Dakota and Lincoln High and St. James to Iowa. There are 21 schools in our region. If the team places in the top approximately six teams, they win a trip to state. To win a trip to the national convention, a team or individual must place first at the state level.

The Minnesota State FFA Convention kicks off Sunday at the University of Minnesota -- Minneapolis campus with a state FFA talent show and a leadership session highlighting the Minnesota State FFA Officers. Monday morning starts with team competitions and ends with an awards program. Teams competing for the Worthington FFA are: Soils, Forestry, Small Animals, Best Informed Greenhand, Creed Speaking, Nursery Landscape, Floriculture, Dairy Cattle, General Livestock, Meats and those receiving their State Degrees.

There are several leadership workshops going on throughout the day. On Tuesday morning the leadership contests compete; the final program is in the afternoon. It is at the Tuesday afternoon program that we find out winners of the various contests and who gets to compete at the National FFA Convention.

FFA offers an opportunity for every interest ranging from music and speech to wildlife and dairy products. Visit the National FFA website at www.ffa.org to learn more about the organization to see if something interests you. Talk to an FFA Advisor for more information, or better yet, ask an FFA member what they like best about the FFA.

Thanks to the community for supporting the FFA, and a special thank you to those who donate their time to work with the various cde teams.
