Community Foundation of Lyon County announces grant recipients
ROCK RAPIDS, Iowa -- The Community Foundation of Lyon County has announced it will award $108,550 in grants to 18 organizations in 2010.
The foundation disperses funds though the Endow Iowa program, which funnels a portion of Iowa gambling revenues to counties without a gambling facility.
Receiving grants in the Arts and Culture category are the Central Lyon Community School District, $7,500 for purchase of 105 new marching band uniforms; and the Lyon County Historical Society, $7,500 to finish new display building by completing the ceiling and realigning lighting.
Civic and Community awards include the Alvord Parks Department, $4,250 toward construction materials, plumbing, electrical costs and fixtures to construct handicap accessible restrooms in the city park shelter house; city of George, $10,000 to convert "filter room" at George Swimming Pool Bathhouse into family/handicap bathroom with a shower; city of Inwood, $10,000 toward construction of handicap-accessible restrooms with showers for camping site; city of Larchwood, $8,050 to construct three bus stop shelters and two diggable forms for children to play on while they wait for bus; city of Lester, $2,800 to create a hard surface walking path from Clinton Street to ball diamond park; George Betterment Club, $6,000 of support to build a basketball court and ice rink in George; George Fire Department, $4,000 (fiscal sponsor city of George) for the purchase of new bunker gear sets; Larchwood Betterment Club, $7,500 to add bleachers for additional spectator seating at the softball park and build a crow's nest for the announcer and score keeper that includes a sound system.
The Larchwood Community Group will receive $10,000 for labor and concrete to create a walking trail around the sports complex; Lester Fire Department, $650 to purchase four air tanks for fire fighters to have fresh air during an emergency; Little Rock Town & Country Club, $6,000 for a digital sign by Town and Country Building to inform residents and visitors of activities in and around Little Rock; Lyon County Conservation Board, $5,000 toward cement overlay of asphalt trail on north shore of Lake Pahoja; Lyon County Fair Association, $1,960 to replace the stairs on east and west sides of the grandstand at the fairgrounds; Northwest Iowa Community College, $2,000 in support for rescue rigging equipment to train emergency responders in high angle, confined space, agriculture and swift water rescue; Rock Rapids Mini Zoo, $5,430 (fiscal sponsor city of Rock Rapids) for the renovation of bird and animal exhibit roof and sides with steel to provide clean, safe housing for animals.
Receiving a $10,000 Health award is Merrill Pioneer Community Hospital. The money will be used toward remodeling of four patient rooms, including replacement of walls, painting, and replacement of restroom doors, sink counter tops and floor covering.
