Con man faces theft charges
A Fargo man faces charges of theft by deception for allegedly conning businesses and individuals out of money and property that authorities say could total hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Law enforcement agencies believe more victims of 40-year-old Kent James Moritz have yet to come forward, West Fargo Police Detective Derek Cruff said.
Fargo police arrested Moritz on Dec. 31 for theft of property at a Fargo store, said Cass County Sheriff's Detective Steve Gabrielson.Gabrielson said Moritz engaged in a wide range of cons, including using a false financial portfolio to buy vehicles and pawning televisions that he stole or paid for with bad checks.
Moritz also took upfront payments for concrete construction jobs that were never completed, Gabrielson said. "There's a wide variety of games that he's playing, con games," he said. "So, we know that there's more people out there."
Six theft-related cases are pending against Moritz in Cass County District Court, Cruff said. Gabrielson said the value of the stolen property will "probably be hundreds of thousands." Moritz is being held in the Cass County Jail on $15,000 cash or bond bail.
