WORTHINGTON -- The Worthington City Council voted unanimously Monday evening to offer Craig Clark the position of city administrator.

Contract details will be determined this week, but if Clark accepts the offer, he would receive a starting salary of $83,026 with the opportunity for a merit-based pay increase after one year of employment.

Sharon Klumpp, a representative of Springsted, Inc., the recruiting firm leading the search, participated in the meeting via telephone. She said Clark could likely take over for Interim City Administrator Gary Hoffmann in November.

Clark was one of the two remaining candidates after this weekend's interviews; the other is Jeff Pederson, who most recently served as city administrator in Grand Island, Neb. Council members -- for whom Monday night marked the third meeting on the subject -- admitted it was a difficult decision.

"I think we've got a couple of good candidates," Alderman Ron Wood said.

Council members discussed ability of the candidates to work in a community the size of Worthington, aptitude at coordinating community efforts and longevity in the position. They said they were impressed with Clark's initiative and energy.

"Personality to me ranks real high," said Alderman Lyle Ten Haken.

"We're very excited about this candidate," added Alderman Mike Kuhle.

Clark most recently worked as the town administrator in Clayton, Wis. He has also served as a committee administrator in the Minnesota House and a senior legislative aide in the U.S. House of Representatives.

He received his master's degree in public administration from Hamline University, St. Paul, and his bachelor's degree in political science and history from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa.

It's hoped city officials will learn of Clark's decision to accept the Worthington position today.
