Cubs grab No. 7 seed in Regionals, face No. 2 Wilmont Cardinals
WORTHINGTON -- With their first playoff series win in the last decade under their belts, the Worthington Cubs claimed the No. 7 seed in the Region 13C Amateur Baseball playoffs Monday and will face off with the No. 2 seed Wilmont Cardinals in a best-of-three series starting Wednesday.
The Cardinals swept the season series with the Cubs, but both games were decided by three runs or less.
The first game of the series is Wednesday in Wilmont with a scheduled starting time set for 7:30 p.m. Game 2 will be Saturday at 2 p.m. in Worthington, while Game 3 (if necessary) will be played Sunday at 2 p.m. in Wilmont.
Wilmont got the No. 2 pick in the Region 13C draft, taking the Jackson Bulls' Ryan Rasche, while Worthington took Cody Kontz of the Adrian A's with the No. 7 pick.
The Fairmont Martins took home the No. 1 overall seed, meaning they will host the No. 8 seeded Minneota Mudhens. The two teams did not play each other this season.
The Mudhens surprised the Jackson Bulls with a two-game sweep in the opening round of the playoffs, capped by a 1-0 win in Game 2 Friday. Fairmont and Minneota will meet Wednesday, Friday and Sunday (if necessary) to decide the series.
The Martins picked up the Pipestone A's Brandon Alfson with their No. 1 draft pick, while the Mudhens took Pat Boggess of the Jackson Bulls with the No. 8 pick.
Coming in as the No. 3 seed, the Luverne Redbirds will take on the No. 6 seed Heron Lake Lakers.
The Redbirds will host Game 1 in Luverne on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., with the Lakers hosting Game 2 at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Game 3 will be played Sunday in Luverne at 4 p.m., if necessary.
In the draft, Luverne took Greg Quist of the Pipestone A's with the No. 3 pick, while Heron Lake picked up Caleb Rossow of the Jackson Bulls at No. 6.
The final pairing for the Regionals features the No. 4 Hadley Buttermakers and the No. 5 Milroy Irish.
The Buttermakers will host Game 1 in Windom at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, with Game 2 to be played at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Legion Field in Marshall. Game 3, if necessary, will be played at 2 p.m. Sunday in Hadley.
Hadley picked the Jackson Bulls' Tom Hady with the No. 4 pick in the draft, while Milroy took the Martin County Foxes' Steven Zehms.
The four series winners will take part in another best-of-three series beginning July 31, with the highest remaining seed hosting the lowest remaining seed.
The winners of those two series advance to the state tournament and play each other in a best-of-three series for seeding and draft positions. The series would start August 7.
The losers of the series will play each other in a best-of-three series, with the winner taking the No. 3 seed for the state tournament.
The remaining teams advance to the state tournament in Delano and Maple Lake, with games starting August 16.
