Darrel Dean Ross

Darrel Dean Ross, age 85, was born on July 31, 1928, in Lake Park, IA, the son of Robert and Violet (Dickinson) Ross. He moved to Reading, MN at the age of 5 where he lived the remainder of his life. Darrel left school at age 14 and went to Minneapolis to work at a salvage yard. He returned to Reading and started working on the Rock Island Railroad at age 15. His parents died when he was age 20 and thereafter Darrel raised his younger sister and brother.

Darrel and Katherine (Kruger/Echternach) were united in marriage in Brewster, MN, on August 1, 1953. Soon after, he was drafted into the US Army where he served 2 years. Upon his discharge he returned to Reading and his family where he worked on the Rock Island Railroad until he was injured in a railroad accident in 1978. Upon recovery he helped with farming and construction business. He enjoyed working with all kinds of animals from pigeons to horses. Darrel enjoyed the company of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and was known affectionately around Reading as "Uncle Darrel" by young and old.

Darrel was a member of the American Legion, Round Lake; Served as President of the Eagles Aerie #3282, Worthington 1995-1996; Charter Member of the Reading Lions Club and a member of the Bethel Evangelical Presbyterian Church, where he served as a Trustee and Deacon.

Darrel died on Friday, November 22, 2013, at the Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Fulda, MN.

Darrel is survived by five children: Judy (Donald) Groninga, Worthington; Joyce McNab (Bill Howell), Eden Prairie; Dennis Echternach (Mary), Round Lake; Jacklin Davis (Steven), St. Cloud; and Kathleen Schweigert (David), Reading; son-in-law, Gary Deuschle, Reading; 17 grandchildren; 42 great grandchildren; brother, Gary Ross (Marjean), Reading and brother-in-law, Jack Kruger, Worthington. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Katherine; daughter, Barbara; two brothers, Robert and Lloyd; four sisters, Bernice, Della, Jean and Twilla and one great grandson, Cody.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 26, 2013, at 10:30 a.m., at the Bethel Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Reading, MN, with Rev. Keith Gallagher officiating. Burial, with military rites, will be at the Summit Lake Township Cemetery near Reading.

Visitation will be held on Monday, November 25, 2013, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington and also one hour prior to the services at the church.
