ADRIAN -- On a snowy night, the Adrian Dragons used a pair of hot shooting performances to defeat Windom, 89-58, in a non-conference girls' basketball contest.

Karli Meyer scored a game-high 25 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to lead Adrian (12-3), while Erica Thier finished with 24 points to lead the Dragons past Windom (4-11).

"We kind of got a little sloppy on defense in the second half and gave them some points in the paint," Adrian head coach Randy Strand said following the game. "But we shot well enough, and we got some easy transition baskets. Sam (Lynn) makes some things happen, and we had some shooters around the perimeter."

Lynn finished with 11 points and 11 assists, while dishing to the rest of the Adrian team that shot 42 percent on the night.

"We played better tonight than when we played Luverne," Windom head coach Sheryl Hanefeld said. "We let one slip away Friday night where we didn't execute anything. Tonight, we were attempting to execute, but Adrian is a very good basketball team."

After Meyer started the scoring for Adrian with a basket, Windom's Megan Ysker (14 points) answered with a shot, and Iina Takala (seven points, four assists) gave the Eagles an early 4-2 lead.

However, behind a pair of baskets from Meyer and a pair of free throws from Thier the Dragons went on a 13-1 run to turn a two-point deficit into a 10-point lead.

Consecutive baskets from Lynn pushed the lead to 19-8 midway through the first half -- forcing a Windom timeout.

Ellie Hormig (11 points) hit a shot out of the timeout to cut the lead to nine, but Adrian answered with an 11-3 run behind a trey from Thier, and a 3-point play from Katy Slater (13 points).

Takala and Hollie Kremmin each hit a pair of free throws late in the first half to cut the lead to 33-19, but the Eagles scored just three more points in the half, as Adrian pushed the lead to 45-22 at the break.

Meyer once again started the scoring for the Dragons in the second half with a 3-point play, and after a basket from Ysker, Meyer hit a shot, and Thier hit a pair of shots to increase the lead to 30 points, 54-24.

However, Windom, who was playing without Casey Christensen, Alii Holt and Makenzie Lovell because of sickness, showed some signs of life offensively, as a pair of free throws from Malori Paplow (nine points) started a 9-0 run for the Eagles.

"I think we were executing the things we talked about at halftime," Hanefeld said. "The minute we let down our defense, they made a five or six point run, and we didn't move our feet on defense."

A basket from Melissa Weidert (five points, 10 rebounds) ended the run, and another trey from Thier put the Adrian offense back in motion.

Meyer and Thier continued to pace the Dragons late in the second half, as a 3-point play and a trey from Meyer started a 12-4 run en route to the 89-58 victory for Adrian.

However, after allowing just 22 points in the first half, Adrian gave up 36 in the final frame.

"We can't give up 36 points in the second half like we did tonight," Strand said. "It wasn't at the end; they had a run there where they had five point-blank shots in the middle of our defense."

Windom was held to just 32 percent shooting and 19 percent (4-of-21) from beyond the arc.

The Dragons were also able to hold a large lead on both the offensive and defensive rebounds. Adrian ended with 54 rebounds, compared to just 31 for Windom.

"If we don't rebound the ball, we don't stay in the game," Hanefeld said. "The key to winning basketball games is defensive rebounding, and we didn't get it done."

Hormig led the rebounding effort for Windom with eight.

Adrian, in the middle of a tight Red Rock Conference race, will travel to Red Rock Central tonight.

"We hope to pick some momentum up so that hopefully our shooting will be solid tomorrow," Strand said. "We'll find out tomorrow."

Windom will host Worthington Thursday in a Southwest Conference tilt.
