Once again, Honor Flight Southwest Minnesota delivered a trip World War II veterans will never forget. This past weekend, more than 100 vets from across southwest Minnesota and northwest Iowa experienced the journey of a lifetime -- an excursion they long deserved, and one made possible by the efforts of so many.

The third Honor Flight Southwest Minnesota trip was like its predecessors in many ways. Visits to the Air Force Memorial, Marine Corps Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery took place Friday and preceded an evening Heroes Banquet and the opportunity for soldiers to share war stories. On Saturday, veterans stopped at the Navy, Vietnam, Korean, Lincoln and Frank D. Roosevelt memorials, and also paid a longer visit to the World War II Memorial.

Viewing of the memorials is always a highlight for the veterans, but so is the royal treatment they always receive along the way. In addition to the Heroes Banquet, there are countless "thank yous" and salutes from people simply recognizing Americans who gave of themselves for our freedom. The send-off from Sioux Falls, S.D., early Friday morning, the welcome at Baltimore-Washington International Airport and the greetings received upon returning home -- they have proven to be unforgettable time and again.

Everyone involved with the Honor Flight Southwest Minnesota, including the countless people who given financially to the cause, gets a salute from us.
