Editorial: Help United Way make its new goal
The United Way of Nobles County has begun its 2011-2012 campaign and is looking for a little extra support this year.
For the past two years, United Way of Nobles County has succeeded in meeting a goal of $140,000 thanks to the benevolence of area residents. This year, there's a new goal -- $150,000 -- being sought.
As has been the case in recent years, a telethon -- scheduled this year for Nov. 8 -- will serve as an important fundraiser. The event provides information about who benefits from local gifts (and how) while offering an array of entertainment from local talent.
This year, 27 different programs and services in Nobles County will benefit from United Way of Nobles County gifts. Volunteers who are also county residents decide how much is allocated to each agency, ensuring that local money is distributed wisely to local organizations by local people.
These same volunteers also help conduct the campaigns each year, keeping costs low and allowing a greater percentage of the money raised to go to the programs and services who need it. They work with area employers, many of which have demonstrated a strong commitment to encouraging workers to contribute.
In some way, United Way of Nobles County benefits all of us. At the same time, all of us should remember just that, and help it meet its campaign goal.
