A forum for Nobles County Board of Commissioners candidates, which took place Tuesday evening in the Worthington High School cafeteria, was well attended by both the candidates and the general public alike.

Of the 14 individuals seeking to be elected to the county board, 13 attended (the one who didn't had a longstanding family obligation). And, more than 100 people took the time to attend the forum -- which was coordinated by this newspaper along with the Worthington Area Chamber of Commerce Governmental Affairs Committee -- to get themselves informed.

The forum was scheduled with the Aug. 14 primary in mind. Districts 2, 3 and 5 have more than two candidates running for the board; the primary will reduce the field to two in each district. But even though candidates in District 1 and 4 won't face primary obstacles, they still utilized the opportunity to present themselves and share their views with constituents.

All five county commissioner seats are up for election this year due to redistricting, and this election is probably one of the most important in recent county history.

The county is beginning to take strides in moving forward without former administrator Mel Ruppert, and the election of an entire board that will steer that course should be taken seriously by the voting public. We thank the candidates and Tuesday night forum attendees for taking part.
