Elmer Louis Sauder

Elmer Louis Sauder, age 89, was born on January 17, 1925, in West Bend, IA, the son of Edward and Nellie (Schneider) Sauder. In 1931, he moved with his family to Jackson County, MN, where he attended school and graduated from Okabena High School in May of 1943. Elmer entered the United States Army on June 12, 1944, and served in the South Pacific in the 43rd Infantry Division and in Japan. He was discharged on May 13, 1946. Elmer married Florence Baumgard on August 6, 1946, and they later divorced. He married Marlus Busse on April 10, 1970, and she passed away on July 13, 1979. Elmer married Barbara "Sherry" Little on October 13, 1984.

Elmer moved to Worthington, MN in 1946 and was a Painter Contractor and owned Sauders Body Shop. After a back injury, he became an agent for State Farm Insurance in Worthington on September 3, 1969, and retired from State Farm Insurance on May 13, 1991. He was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Okabena Legion, Worthington Elks Lodge, and a lifetime member of the Worthington VFW. Elmer enjoyed his antique cars, fishing, and playing cards with his Elk buddies. He loved being with his family and grandchildren. Elmer died on Thursday, July 10, 2014, at the Royal C. Johnson Veterans Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.

Elmer is survived by his wife, Barbara "Sherry" Sauder of Worthington, MN; five daughters, Sheryl (Duane) Leopold of Lakefield, MN, Janice (Grant) Wilcox of Bayfield, WI, Jan Ling of Minneapolis, MN, Vickie (Dale) Larson of Worthington, MN, and Lisa (Bob) Sturges of Lincoln, NE; one son, David (Penny) Little of Fort Worth, TX; eleven grandchildren; six great grandchildren, and one brother, Harold Sauder of Heron Lake, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Melvin and Raymond Sauder.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 15, 2014, at 10:30 a.m., at the Benson Funeral Home Chapel in Worthington, MN, with Rev. Richard Ricker officiating. Burial, with military rites, will be held in the Worthington Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Monday, July 14, 2014, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington, MN.
