Evelyn Marie (Tharp) Reiste
Former Ocheyedan resident Evelyn Marie (Tharp) Reiste, 93, died April 16, 2014 at Sibley Nursing and Rehab. A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m., Saturday, April 26 at the Ocheyedan United Methodist with Pastor Shannon Pascual officiating. Visitation, with family present, will precede the service from 9:00-10:45 a.m., at the church. A private burial of cremains will follow that afternoon at Waterman Township Cemetery in Sutherland. Andringa Funeral Home, Ocheyedan and Sibley, is in charge of arrangements.
Evelyn was born May 24, 1920, the second of six children of F. Wayne and Ruth Tharp in Moville. The family moved to Sutherland where Evelyn was active in school music and clubs. She was a talented singer, poet and artist and helped design many school play and dance backdrops and clothing.
After graduation from high school and with a penchant for bookkeeping, Ev worked for local banks and at the O'Brien county courthouse. During World War II, every returning service member had to report to the courthouse Evelyn recalled, so she was always happy to welcome them back.
Evelyn married Robert K. Reiste on June 10, 1944 in Sheldon. They lived in Sioux Falls and Spearfish, SD. After leaving the military, Bob and Ev (with a young son in tow) began a cross-country search to buy a newspaper, traveling from Iowa to California and back. They purchased The Ocheyedan Press in 1950.
During Bob and Ev's 40-plus year tenure at The Press-News, they won dozens of state and national newspaper awards. They were honored as Master Editor Publishers in 1977 by the Iowa Newspaper Association-one of the few married couples so honored in those early INA days.
Evelyn was active in the American Legion Auxiliary, Eastern Star, Unity Circle Women's Club, the parks and housing boards, commercial club and helped design and paint the Ocheyedan Jubilee celebration backdrop still displayed at the local library.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church and served on the church and parsonage design committees, was a long-time Sunday school teacher, and participated in several other church groups. She served as a Cub Scout den mother, kept her artistic talents alive and, in fact, drew The Mounder mascot used on the school page.
Evelyn is survived by son Kenneth (Barbara) of Clear Lake, SD; daughters Kristin of Sioux Falls, SD, Roberta (Dennis Youde) of Maple Valley, WA and Jan (Arlyn Pedley) of Ocheyedan; grandchildren Nicolle (Bryan) Read, Shannon (Chris) Larson, Danielle (Chad) Schiernbeck, Jacquelyn (David) Francis, John Reiste, Christina (Jeremy) Baird, Laura (Jason) Barrie, and Nicholas Pedley; 11 great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, three sisters, two brothers, and great-grandson, Sutton Roesch.
