Federated members help fund local projects with Operation Round Up
JACKSON -- The Federated Rural Electric Trust, Jackson, recognized 17 local organizations receiving $9,904 through Operation Round Up Nov. 10.
These donations occur due to monthly contributions by Federated members. Seventeen organizations received money in this 34th round of funding.
Organizations receiving donations are: Dunnell Book Room; Jackson County Central Riverside Elementary, Jackson; SW/WC Service Cooperative; Pleasantview Elementary, Lakefield; Jackson County Historical Society, Lakefield; Truman Preschool; Martin County West Community Education; Jackson County Central High School Library/Media Center; Lakefield Fire Department; Martin County West High School Special Education; Jackson County Central Robotics Team; Northrop Area Baseball Association; Sherburn Fire Department; Jackson Volunteer Fire Department; Granada First Responders; Jackson County Department of Human Services; and the American Red Cross of Southwest Minnesota.
The trust's board received 24 applications totaling $18,243. The board will meet again in the spring to determine the next round of funding. The deadline for submitting applications is Feb. 24, 2012.
About 75 percent of Federated Rural Electric members participate in Operation Round Up. They allow their electric bills to be rounded up to the nearest dollar. For example, a bill of $35.75 is rounded up to $36. The extra cents go to a special trust fund, which is administered by an independent trust board that consists of seven Federated members.
Since the first round of funding in 1995, more than $360,000 has been awarded to local organizations and as high school scholarships.
