The sight of chairs placed along the King Turkey Day parade route well in advance of the annual event is a familiar one to many. It’s become almost a tradition for some to look on Friday to see just how many chairs have been set out ahead of time, and who has put them out the earliest.

This year, chairs can be still set out early — just not too early. The Worthington Police Department has requested that parade-goers not set chairs out along the parade route until 7 p.m. today. That way, chairs will not interfere with business traffic during regular daytime hours. I’ve heard that folks who ignore this could wind up having their chairs removed, so it seems far easier to simply wait until 7 p.m. or later than deal with that alternative.

As for me, I’m having some acquaintances set out a cage for me along 10th Street at 7 p.m. sharp tonight. I want to have a great view of Paycheck being the first bird across the finish line.

In fact, I might need to have a couple of different spots reserved downtown to catch some of my favorite Turkey Day action. The 10K event is always a sight to behold, and I’ve heard so many runners and attendees alike say they are inspired by the support the community always provides along the way. And, I like to see people of all ages —from infants to the elderly — take part in the YMCA 5K Family Fun Walk that begins at 9 a.m. at the old Y. I have it on good authority that there’s likely going to be record participation this year. Around 650 folks have already registered, and as many as 800 are expected to walk on Saturday morning.
