First baby arrives on 3rd
WORTHINGTON -- Khloe Delphine Markus missed her due date -- and having the cool birthdate of 1-1-11-- but she still managed to be the first baby to be born in 2011 at Sanford Medical Center Worthington.
The daughter of Chad and Sophia Markus of Worthington, Khloe entered the world at 5:29 p.m. Monday, weighing 7 pounds, 3 ounces and 20 inches long.
With a due date of Jan. 1, the Markuses knew they had a chance having the first baby of the year at the local hospital, but when the day passed by without any labor pains, they thought the honor would go to another infant. But it was a slow weekend in the SMCW Women's Center, and the first laboring mothers of 2011 checked in on Monday.
"The race was on next door," said Sophia, referring to another expectant mother in the adjacent room. "I just started pushing before she did."
New mom Sophia is employed as an instructor at Avalon School of Cosmetology in Worthington, while dad Chad is a self-employed over-the-road truck driver. Khloe is their first child, and with her anticipated due date already pushed back from Dec. 21 to Jan. 1, they were anxious for her arrival.
"For the last three weeks, I thought there's no way I was going to make it to the 1st," said Sophia, who worked up until her due date. "I thought she was going to come at anytime."
Because they knew the baby was a girl, Chad and Sophia had narrowed their list of names to two but didn't make the final decision until after she was born.
"Chad surprised me with which one it was going to be," Sophia said.
"It was just a spur-of-the-moment deal," explained Chad. "After she was born, they took her away from her mom to clean her up."
"And they asked me what her name was, and I looked at Chad," continued Sophia.
"And I just barked out Khloe," Chad said. "It was just the one that rolled off my tongue at the time."
Khloe's middle name is a tribute to great-grandmother Delphine Burns of Worthington. She is the granddaughter of Daryle Albersman, Leslie and Dan Jensen and Ronella Markus, all of Worthington, and the late Ken Markus. Her other great-grandparents are Marvin Titus, Lakefield, Rose Bixby and Thelma Stanley, both of Worthington, and Don and Donna Markus, Ocheyedan, Iowa.
The baby's name was a birthday surprise, and so was her appearance -- she arrived with a full head of dark hair.
"I was bald, I think, until I was 2 years old," noted Sophia. "When they said, 'She has a lot of hair,' I said, 'Are you sure?'"
Sophia and Khloe were set to be discharged from the hospital today. They will head home with a basket full of gifts from SMCW, including a handmade blanket and cap and silver cup engraved with Khloe's name and birthdate.
"I think when we take her home, reality sets in, when we don't have a nurse helping us," said new dad Chad.
