Florence was born on September 25, 1917, the daughter of Henry and Ellen (Peterson) Cordes of Round Lake Township, Jackson County, MN. She was raised on a farm near Iowa Lake, attended rural schools, and graduated from Round Lake High School in 1936. Florence studied piano and violin while growing up.

Her father and Uncle Johnny played in the town bands and for dances while she was growing up, and music became an important part of her life. She met Kenneth Gravley at a dance, and exchanged letters while he was in service in WW II. They were married in Windom, MN on March 1, 1947. They farmed in Renville County, MN until they moved to a farm in Osceola County, IA in 1953. Retiring in 1986, they moved to Worthington, MN.

Florence was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a brother, Stanley Cordes, and special friend, Rose Kuhl.

She is survived by a niece, Cathy Clark (Bruce) of Centerville, IA, and their children: Nathan of Hilo, HA, and his son, Narayan of Flagstaff, AZ; Tasha (Terry) of Marshalltown, IA; and Eric (Jaymie) of Dewitt, IA.

Florences family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the caretakers of South Shore Care Center and Compassionate Care Hospice for the wonderful care and companionship they gave to Florence. We express our sincere gratitude to the children of Rose Kuhl, who treated Florence as a member of their family.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 21, 2014, at 11:00 a.m., at the Benson Funeral Home Chapel in Worthington, MN. Burial will be held prior to the service at 9:30 a.m. at the Round Lake Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Compassionate Care Hospice.
