Forbes wins five awards at state meet event
HARRIS, Iowa -- Nathan Forbes, owner of Forbes Meat Processing & Liquor in Harris, recently received five awards at the Iowa Meats Processors Association's 77th annual convention. The event took place Feb. 14-17 at the Gateway Hotel and Conference Center and the Iowa State University Meat Laboratory in Ames.
Processors from 38 Iowa plants were in attendance, as well as suppliers in the trading show displaying products and services in 42 booths.
Forbes received the following awards:
* Reserve Grand Champion, Specialty Ham
* Reserve Champion, Canadian Bacon
* Reserve Grand Champion, Summer Sausage Cooked
* Reserve Grand Champion, Cooked Ring Bologna
* Reserve Grand Champion, Liver Sausage
Convention participants attended seminars on "Role of Phosphates in Processed Meat Products, "Calculations and Mixing Procedures for Brines Using Phosphates," "Updates to the Beef and Pork Check-off Programs," "Manufacture of Collagen Casing Smoked Sausages," "The Link Between Animal Fats, Heart Disease and Cancer" and "Correct Naming and Usage of Single Ingredient Meat Products."
