Generals run past Orabs, 69-52
SIBLEY, Iowa -- With an 11-4 run to start the second quarter, the Sibley-Ocheyedan Generals ran away from Sheldon, 69-52, Saturday in a non-conference boys' basketball game.
S-O had an 11-3 advantage at the free throw line and had three players in double figures to claim the 17-point victory.
Even though Sheldon's (6-7) Matt De Jong (eight points, six assists) got the Orabs on the board first, Ross Wiersma (16 points, eight rebounds) answered right back for the Generals (7-5).
Sheldon's Taylor Zeutenhorst (14 points, six rebounds) hit a pair of shots, while S-O's Thomas Ronval hit a trey in between as the Orabs had an early 6-5 lead.
Neither team could open up more than a one-point lead as S-O had an 11-10 lead after the first quarter.
"It's kind of like a boxing match," S-O head coach Bill Mueller said. "We want to feel out the game a little bit and figure out what's a foul and what's not a foul. We play pretty aggressively, so we don't want to get everyone in foul trouble."
After a slow first quarter, the Generals' offense came alive in the second. With a pair of baskets from Marshall Doeden (15 points, eight rebounds), the Generals jumped out to an 18-12 lead early in the second quarter.
Wiersma scored six consecutive points as the Generals were off and running.
Sam Kruger (six assists) scored the next five points -- increasing the Generals' lead to 29-19.
Each team scored just two more field goals in the final three minutes as S-O had a 33-23 lead at the break.
"We're a team that wants to get up and down the floor, so it's just a matter of time before we get everyone in sync," Mueller said. "We're playing without one of our starters tonight, Greg Hiemstra, who is a normal starter for us, and it takes a while to get used to the speed and flow of the game."
De Jong hit a shot to start the scoring in the second half for Sheldon, but S-O answered with a 12-2 run to increase the lead to 18.
Wiersma started the run with a shot, and Ronval and Matt Juber (seven points) hit consecutive treys to spark the spurt.
However, the Generals' offense would hit a dry spell, as Nick Pulscher hit a 3-pointer and Zeutenhorst hit a shot to cut the lead to 13.
"I thought there were some times that I thought when we built a lead we kind of gave a few possessions away," Mueller said. "That's where we have to be a little more mentally strong. We didn't play selfishly, but we can't give possessions away. We need to take 16-point leads and maintain it or get it to 20."
Sheldon's Andy Dykstra (13 points, six rebounds) scored the Orabs' finals five points, but S-O held a commanding 50-37 lead after three quarters.
After Ronval started the fourth quarter with a trey from the right wing, Pulscher answered with a 3-pointer of his own to keep the deficit at 13.
However, that was the last basket Pulscher would score as the senior ended with just nine points on the night.
"I thought we did a nice job on Nick Pulscher; he had 31 last night," Mueller said. "I don't know what he had tonight, but I know it wasn't 31."
After the Pulscher trey, the Generals continued to pound the ball down low. Doeden scored six consecutive plays, including a basket on a high-low feed from Wiersma.
"We knew that in the post we could take advantage of them," Mueller said. "The two people we started out in there, Marshall and Ross, did a great job. We knew that's where we had a mismatch at, and that's where we were going to look to attack first."
The Generals hit six free throws down the stretch, while Sheldon's Tony Rodger had all six of his points in the final three minutes. However, it wasn't enough, as S-O went on to a 69-52 victory.
S-O will have some time off before taking the floor again. The Generals will be off Tuesday, but will play Central Lyon Thursday and Okoboji Friday evening.
Sheldon will host Spirit Lake Tuesday.
