Girls basketball: Trojan girls edge MCW, 58-51
TRIMONT — Brooke Henning played a strong game inside and Ana Boever did several things well as the Worthington Trojans topped host Martin County West 58-51 Tuesday in a non-conference high school girls basketball game.
The contest pitted two of southwest Minnesota’s better teams against each other, and WHS head coach Eric Lindner was happy for it.
“It was a good game for us to get that experience, and the kids did a very good job of playing with the lead toward the end of the game,” Lindner said. “That’s what we need right now. We need some good games that are able to test us.”
Worthington, 17-2, trailed Martin County West 29-26 at halftime. The Mavericks moved the ball well and when the Trojans tried to trap defensively, Lindner said, “the ball didn’t roll our way.” Sub-par outside shooting also hampered the visitors, but when they got the ball inside to Henning, who finished with a game-high 21 points, better results occurred.
Martin County West shot the ball well early in the second half but Worthington turned things around for a 13-point lead at one point, then held on.
Boever had 16 points to go along with eight rebounds, seven steals and five blocks. Abbie Landgaard had six assists. Henning pulled down 10 rebounds while Paige Gravenhof had 11 points, 10 rebounds and four steals.
Reilley Geistfeld had 13 points, Taryn Tumbleson 12 and Kate Thiesse 11 for Martin County West.
The Trojans out-rebounded the Mavericks 36-33 and turned the ball over 12 times to the Mavs’ 20. Martin County West, always a strong outside shooting team, hit six of 14 shots from three-point range.
