Girls tennis: Adams, Smedsrud advance for Luverne
REDWOOD FALLS — Paige Adams and Kynzie Smedsrud advanced as a doubles team for the Luverne Cardinals Thursday in the Section 3A individual tennis tournament.
The Cardinal duo will compete in the semifinals Monday beginning at 9 a.m. at the Gustavus Tennis Bubble.
Adams and Smedsrud defeated River Valley’s Ashley Johnson and Carissa Evers in their first match Thursday, 6-0, 6-0. They then topped Sophie Shelgren and Abby Fitzgerald of Fairmont 6-4, 6-1.
In other doubles competition, Luverne’s Brianna Erickson and Danielle Kneip opened with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Montevideo’s Jessa Kack and Mikaela Erickson. They followed that up with a loss, 4-6, 1-6, to St. James’ Julia Boever and Aubrey Eckstrom.
Luverne’s McKenzi Wenninger defeated Yellow Medicine East’s Ann Clarke 7-5, 6-1 in singles before losing to top-seeded Lorena Hernandez of St. James 6-0, 6-0.
Another Cardinal, Lexi Severtson, lost to St. James’ Taylor Nordhanson 6-1, 6-2.
“Paige and Kynzie did exactly as a No. 4 seed should do,” said LHS head coach Greg Antoine. “They were in total control of their first match and really took it to River Valley. In their second match they ran into a good Fairmont team. The first set was close, with some outstanding shots by both teams. We really hit some nice angles to score points.
“In the second set we used the momentum from the first set and never looked back.”
