Griffon places third at Briar Cliff Invitational
SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- Ashton Griffon is peaking at the right time.
A freshman 125-pounder on Minnesota West's wrestling team, Griffon lost his first match Saturday but responded by winning his next four and taking third place at the Briar Cliff Invitational.
"It just shows how much he's come along," Minnesota West coach Bob Purcell said, referring to Griffon, who won three decisions and a major decision. "He's really stepped it up in the second half of the season, and I think he's peaking at the right time going into districts."
The individual tournament was the last competition the Bluejays will have before beginning the district tournament on Sunday in Fort Dodge, Iowa.
Bryan Louis, who went 1-2 at 149 pounds, was the only other Minnesota West wrestler to record a victory on Saturday.
Daniel Cordido (133), Jamal McAllister (133), Ryan Teal (157), James Sebea (165), Jarek Bannister (Hwt.) and Brance Frehse (Hwt.) each went 0-2 for Minnesota West, which was the only junior college team at the event.
