WORTHINGTON — The heat wasn’t the most oppressive thing the Worthington Trojans girls tennis team had to deal with Thursday.

Visiting Fairmont swept into town and took all seven varsity matches, dropping WHS to 1-2 on the season. Worthington did not win a set in singles or doubles.

“Good consistency,” said Trojans head coach Mike Marquardt. “We just didn’t finish because we didn’t get opportunities to get up to the net, or to control the ball. They took control and pretty much contained it the whole match.”

At first singles, Fairmont’s Aubrey Green defeated Worthington’s Emily Williamson 6-3, 6-3. At second singles, Missy Viesselman topped Rachel Drietz 6-1, 6-2. At third singles Allison Moeller beat Annie Lesnar 6-1, 6-0. And at fourth singles, Ellie Tonder topped Alicia Khatt 6-1, 6-3.

At first doubles, Fairmont’s Abby Fitzgerald and Sophie Shelgren beat Worthington’s Makensie Carstensen and Miranda LeBrun 6-2, 6-1. At second doubles, Jill Paris and Shantel Quist beat Sarah Janssen and Erika Schutte 6-4, 6-2. And at third doubles, Briana Gratz and Andrea Carstensen teamed up to beat Worthington’s Paige Stewart and Shelby Larson 6-1, 6-1.

RV, Montevideo at Luverne

LUVERNE —Luverne defeated Southwest Conference rival Redwood Valley 6-1 Thursday and lost to Montevideo 4-3.

Winning two matches for the Cardinals were Paige Adams at first singles, Kynzie Smedsrud at second singles and Samantha Pierce at fourth singles. All three won in straight sets.

Adams won matches 6-2, 6-3 over Ahnna Malecek of Redwood Valley and 6-4, 6-4 over Kailey Maroney of Montevideo. Smedsrud won by scores of 6-4, 6-4 over Alissa Lueck and 6-3, 7-6 (7-1) over Morgan Reisinger. And Pierce won 6-2, 6-2 and 6-3, 6-2 over her rivals Alexis Johnson and Nikki Erickson.

Against Redwood Valley, all four Luverne singles players prevailed, with Monaya Hustoft adding to the sweep at third singles with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) victory over Redwood’s Carli Grannes.

Luverne was less dominant in doubles. Though LHS won two of three doubles matches against Redwood Valley, it lost all three against Montevideo. Lexie Severtson and Tatiana Gust won 6-2, 6-3 over Redwood’s Tori Jeseriz and Rhylee Schmidt at second doubles and Kennedy Gonnerman and Brooke Nattress won 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 10-5 supertiebreaker over RV’s Kenzie Manthei and Kylie Doering.

“We struggled in doubles today against Montevideo. We just don’t seem to be playing together very well at any level of our doubles,” said LHS head coach Greg Antoine.
