HLWD receives $20K EPA grant

HERON LAKE -- The Heron Lake Watershed District was recently awarded $20,600 from the Environmental Protection Agency's 319 Grant program to install J-hook weir streambank stabilization projects on Jack Creek and Okabena Creek.

J-hook weirs are a natural, effective, relatively inexpensive and easily implemented method of erosion control. Benefits include streambank erosion control, restoration, stabilization, sediment and phosphorus reduction, habitat gain and improved water quality.

Once the grant agreement is signed, HLWD staff will work with the Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCDS) and watershed landowners to secure one site on Jack Creek and one site on Okabena Creek for project implementation.
