HOCKEY ROUNDUP: Luverne edges Trojans; Eagles fall at home
LUVERNE -- Worthington's Erin Heffernen scored a goal with five seconds remaining Thursday night in a girls' hockey contest, but the Luverne Cardinals proved too much in a 4-1 victory.
"The passing was better and we played pretty well," Worthington assistant coach Mark Raboin said. "Moving the puck was better in general from what we've had. We're skating a lot better."
Kat Dahl put the Cardinals on the board first in the second period on an assist from Mikki Fitzer.
Leading 1-0 entering the third period, Luverne (9-11) scored three unanswered goals.
Fitzer scored an unassisted goal early in the period, and then scored on assists from Paige Olson and Steph Schultz, giving Luverne a 3-0 lead.
Dahl scored her second goal of the night to give Luverne a 4-0 lead.
Heffernen then scored in the final seconds, cutting the final deficit to three goals.
Taylor Baumhoefner made 53 saves for the Trojans, while Luverne's Katie Shearer stopped seven shots.
Luverne will host Morris/Benson Area Saturday, while Waseca travels to Worthington the same day.

WINDOM -- Sara Luhmann scored a pair of goals for Windom Area, but St. Peter/LeSueur-Henderson/Montgomery-Lonsdale defeated the Eagles Thursday night.
Johnson's first goal gave WA a 1-0 lead, but SP/L-H/M-L came back with two unanswered goals to take a 2-1 lead after the first period.
After another SP/L-H/M-L goal in the second period, Johnson scored her second goal of the night, but the Eagles trailed 3-2 heading into the final period.
Luhmann, who assisted Johnson one her two goals, scored on herself in the third period, but SP/L-H/M-L scored twice in the 5-3 victory.
Brooklyn Drahota made 33 saves on the night, while the Eagles managed 25 shots.

Boys Luverne 8, Worthington 2
LUVERNE -- Zach Olson had two goals to lead the Cardinals to a season sweep of the Trojans.
Phil Paquette scored on an assist from Brent Dinger, and Connor Fitzer scored on assists from Nick Meyer and Derek Van Santen to give Luverne a 2-0 lead going into the first intermission.
Tyler Obermoller scored a short-handed goal on an assist from Jake Smith, and Brandon Berger scored on an assist from Mitch Benson in the second period to get Worthington back in the game.
But Luverne scored four times in the second period and added two unanswered goals in the third to pull away.
Van Santen, Skyler Swier and Josh Connell each scored, and Tanner Skattum made 21 saves for Luverne, which will put its eight-game unbeaten streak on the line Saturday against visiting Morris/Benson Area.
Worthington will look to snap an eight-game losing streak at home Saturday against Waseca, which already has defeated the Trojans twice this season.
