Inwood girl dies after pool incident
ROCK RAPIDS, Iowa -- An 11-year-old Inwood, Iowa, girl died Thursday night in a Sioux Falls, S.D., hospital, one day after she was recovered from the Rock Rapids, Iowa, municipal swimming pool.
Kaitlyn M. Heyden was discovered in the pool around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, just before the pool was to close for the night.
Lyon County Sheriff Blythe Bloemendaal said Friday that he is still waiting for results of an autopsy to determine how the girl ended up at the bottom of the pool.
"We are waiting for results to determine what the cause was," he said. "We know there were some preexisting medical issues she had that may have caused her to be at the bottom of the pool."
CPR was performed on Heyden until ambulance personnel arrived on the scene. She was transported to the Rock Rapids Hospital and airlifted to Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls.
